Luis SuarezLuis Suarez made it a clean sweep Monday when England’s Football Writers’ Association voted him 2014 Footballer of the Year.

Suarez earned 52 percent of the journalists’ votes, topping the poll ahead of teammate Steven Gerrard and Manchester City’s Yaya Toure.

“Those members who have been fortunate enough to be working at a match involving Luis Suarez have witnessed an astonishing talent first-hand,” FWA chairman Andy Dunn said, according to LiverpoolFC.com. “Tireless endeavor allied to extraordinary imagination makes an irresistible combination. Add ingenious, impudent finishing and you have a footballer who truly quickens the pulse.

“Luis is a remarkable gifted addition to the long and distinguished list of winners of our award.”

Suarez has scored 30 Premier League goals in 2013-14, powering Liverpool’s record-breaking attack and helping the club return to the Premier League elite.

Suarez is the first Liverpool player to win the writers’ Footballer of the Year Award since Gerrard claimed it in 2009.

The FWA will present Suarez with the Footballer of the Year Award at a gala dinner May 15 in London.

Suarez won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year Award last week, and this latest honor confirms his status as English soccer’s outstanding performer in 2013-14.
