It’s not out of the ordinary for prospects to get emotional when they receive the call that they’ve been drafted, but Michael Sam probably had more on his mind than most potential picks going into the 2014 NFL draft.
Sam was considered a mid-to-late round pick from the beginning, but some were concerned that the media attention that would come with Sam being the first openly gay NFL player could turn some teams away.
For Sam, getting the phone call that the St. Louis Rams had drafted him must have felt like total acceptance. He shared an emotional moment with his boyfriend, Vito, and a room full of his friends.
