NEW YORK — The New England Patriots selected a defensive end out of tiny Concordia University-St. Paul with the No. 198 overall pick in this year’s NFL draft.
The Patriots grabbed Zach Moore in the sixth round Saturday. The Division II prospect had seven sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss as a senior with the Golden Bears. He had 14 sacks and 21 tackles for loss as a junior in 2012.
The two-time captain at Concordia ran a 4.79-second 40-yard dash at 6-foot-6, 269 pounds at the NFL Scouting Combine in February, with a 7.41-second three-cone drill, a 4.46-second short shuttle, a 10-foot-3 broad jump and a 33.5-inch vertical leap.
Moore adds depth and competition at defensive end for the Patriots, where they have starters Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich and reserves Will Smith, Michael Buchanan and Jake Bequette. Jones and Ninkovich were overworked in 2013 without a viable rotational pass rusher last season.
