The Boston Red Sox made a roster move Monday, calling up catcher/first baseman Ryan Lavarnway from Triple-A one day after placing Mike Napoli on the 15-day disabled list.
Reliever Alex Wilson was optioned to Pawtucket to make room on the 25-man roster.
This is the first major league call-up of 2014 for Lavarnway, who has seen action with the big club in each of the last three seasons. All of that action has been behind the plate or in a designated hitter role, but Lavarnway has played 26 games at first base with the PawSox this season and can do so for Boston if called upon.
The 26-year-old has played in 44 games overall for Pawtucket this season, batting .265 with seven doubles, two home runs and 11 RBIs.
David Ortiz will start at first Monday against the Atlanta Braves as the Red Sox try to snap their 10-game losing streak.
