One Griffin leading the franchise might not be enough for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
With the team simultaneously promoting David Griffin from interim to full-time general manager and firing head coach Mike Brown, the Cavs could be eyeing former Boston Celtics player Adrian Griffin for Brown’s old job. Adrian Griffin is the “top candidate” to become the next head coach in Cleveland, USA Today reported Monday, citing a person close to the situation.
Griffin is an assistant on Chicago Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau’s staff, where he has worked since 2010. He also served under Scott Skiles for two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks, after a long and winding playing career that took him through the USBL, the CBA and Italy before he joined the Celtics as an undrafted free agent in 1999Â at the age of 25.
The 39-year-old from Wichita, Kan., reportedly also has been considered for other coaching vacancies. He interviewed with the Philadelphia 76ers last summer.
Griffin’s education also extends beyond basketball. With all due respect to honorary doctorate-holder Brad Stevens, Griffin is on his way to actually earning his “Dr.” title. Griffin has been pursuing a doctorate in leadership studies while coaching.
