Ryan Giggs is staying at Manchester United after all.
Giggs is set to become Louis van Gaal’s assistant manager once he accepts the Dutchman’s offer of a senior role on his staff, according to the Guardian.
“While Giggs could yet decide to refuse the offer from Van Gaal, if he did so this would represent a major surprise as the Welshman is keen to remain at Old Trafford,” the report says.
The news should end speculation that Giggs would leave Manchester United this summer.
Giggs currently serves as interim player-manager at Old Trafford, having assumed the hot seat after Manchester United fired David Moyes last month. However, Giggs reportedly was not considered a candidate for the job on a permanent basis.
Van Gaal is expected to be named Manchester United manager in the coming days. The 62-year-old could benefit from Giggs’ inside knowledge, as he seeks to rebuild the Red Devils following a disastrous 2013-14 season.
Van Gaal currently works as the head coach of the Netherlands’ national team and is expected to assume Manchester United manager’s role following his country’s participation at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Giggs is likely to join goalkeeping coach Frans Hoek, medical trainer Jos van Dijk and video analyst Max Reekers on Van Gaal’s staff, but the futures of Van Gaal’s current assistants, Patrick Kluivert and Danny Blind, are uncertain at this point.
