Ryan MallettThe first draft-day trade involving the New England Patriots could take place before the draft even begins.

Ryan Mallett could be on his way to the Houston Texans for a third-round pick in a deal that could be completed “soon,” CSNNE’s Tom E. Curran reported Thursday, via a source. Acquiring Mallett would give the Texans the quarterback they sorely need and allow them to draft defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney first overall.

A few minutes after his breaking-news tweet, however, Curran added that a different source told him there was “nothing doing” between the Patriots and Texans.

In other words, don’t go very far. The draft-day machinations are only getting started.

UPDATE (7:48 p.m.): A league source confirmed to NESN’s Doug Kyed that the Patriots and Texans have discussed a deal that would send Mallett to Houston in exchange for a third-round pick.
