Ryan LavarnwayBoston Red Sox catcher/first baseman Ryan Lavarnway was placedĀ on the 15-day disabled list, the team announced Friday afternoon.

The move came just four games after Lavarnway received his first major league call-up of the season.

Lavarnway made his first career start at first base Thursday night against the Atlanta Braves but left the game in the fifth inning after injuring his wrist during a second-inning at-bat.

“It was on one of the balls I fouled straight back in my first at-bat,” Lavarnway said after the game, via MLB.com. “I felt a pain in my hand/wrist area. I thought I would be able to play through it. Tried to stay in the game, obviously, tried to play through it. When I got in the on-deck circle for my next at-bat, when Grady (Sizemore) ended up making the last out, I was having a real difficult time swinging. So I wanted to let a healthy guy have that at-bat instead of trying to force my way in and giving them an easy out.”

In his place, the Red Sox have recalled outfielder/first baseman Alex Hassan from Triple-A. Hassan, a Milton, Mass., native and Boston College High School graduate, hasĀ played 194 gamesĀ at Pawtucket over the last three seasons but has never before been called up to the big club.

Hassan has posted aĀ .217/.318/.303 slash line with one home run and 19 RBIs in 45 games withĀ the PawSox this season.
