Ryan Hunter-Reay became the first American since 2006 to win the Indianapolis 500, pulling off the feat in dramatic fashion.
Hunter-Reay and Helio Castroneves traded the lead four times during the last six laps, but it was the American who pulled ahead at the last second to win by 0.0600 seconds — the second-closest finish in the race’s history.
“I’m a proud American boy, that’s for sure,” Hunter-Reay said in Victory Lane. “I’ve watched this race since I was sitting in diapers on the floor in front of the TV. This is American history, this race, this is American tradition.”
Marco Andretti finished third and Carlos Munoz was fourth.
While Hunter-Reay was certainly ecstatic to take a big gulp of the traditional victory milk, his baby (who was dressed adorably in a bright yellow fire suit) wanted nothing to do with the drink.
