Before the 2013-14 season, Anaheim Ducks winger Teemu Selanne announced his intentions to retire from the NHL, and the day finally came when the Ducks were eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night.
After the post-game handshake line was over following the Ducks’ Game 7 loss, Kings players stayed on the ice, along with Ducks players, to salute Selanne — who is beloved throughout hockey. Selanne fought back tears as the Kings tapped their sticks on the ice to recognize him.
Selanne skated 14:02 minutes in the game and was a minus-1 with three shots on goal. He finished the postseason with two goals in 11 games.
The Finnish Flash played in 1,451 regular-season games in the NHL and another 129 in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He’s scored 684 regular-season goals, 11th all-time in the NHL, and 44 in the playoffs.
We may not have seen the last of Selanne on the ice, though, as rumors have swirled that he could resurface in the KHL. Selanne’s old Finnish team, Jokerit, is joining the KHL for the 2014-15 season, according to Yahoo! Sports.
