USA’s Preliminary 2014 World Cup Roster Announced By Jurgen Klinsmann


Juerg KlinsmannU.S. Soccer announced its preliminary squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup on Monday.

Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann has called 30 players into training camp ahead of the tournament, which begins next month in Brazil.

The United States will spend two weeks practicing at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., starting Wednesday. The camp runs until May 25 and will conclude with an exhibition game against Azerbaijan on May 27.

Only 23 of the 30 players will make the United States’ final World Cup squad, and Klinsmann has until June 2 to decide who will travel.

Players from 24 clubs in nine countries make up the United States’ preliminary roster. MLS clubs contributed 15 players to the squad, while clubs in England’s Premier League and Germany’s Bundesliga (first division) add four apiece. Klinsmann called two players from Liga MX (Mexico’s first division) clubs.

The 30-man list also includes nine players from the United States’ 2010 World Cup team: Jozy Altidore, DaMarcus Beasley, Michael Bradley, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Maurice Edu, Clarence Goodson, Brad Guzan and Tim Howard. Alejandro Bedoya was on the preliminary squad in 2010 but failed to make the final cut.

The United States’ World Cup adventure begins June 16 when it plays Ghana.
