The intensity in Sunday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field reached its apex in the seventh inning when the benches emptied and three players were ejected.

It all started when Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar stole third base while no one was covering it. He then started shouting at the Red Sox dugout and pointed his finger in the same direction. The benches emptied when Escobar began walking toward the Sox dugout, at which point Jonny Gomes came in from left field and shoved Escobar. There was some pushing and shoving between the teams after that, but it didn’t escalate much further. Escobar, Gomes and Rays infielder Sean Rodriguez were all ejected.
