Denver Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker certainly isn’t hurting for cash, but that doesn’t mean he’s going to repay the money he was given in error for wins at this year’s Kentucky Derby.
Welker won so much cash at Churchill Downs that he walked out giving out $100 bills to people — but the racetrack announced Friday that a combination of mechanical malfunction and human error resulted in an overpayment of nearly $15,000 to an associate of Welker’s.
The wide receiver joined the “Dan Patrick Show” on Friday, and was asked about whether he would return the extra money.
“Yeah, get in line,” Welker said, via The Courier Journal. “…I’ve heard about that. I’ve never heard of it actually happening, and supposedly my group got that. But we had no clue. They could have under-paid us and we wouldn’t have known.”
Welker walked away with $57,193.90 instead of his actual due: $42,295.38.
But Churchill Downs officials said they’re not too concerned with getting the money back.
“At the end of the day, it’s our mistake, and we’re not worried about the recovery,” Churchill Downs spokesman Darren Rogers said. “We just hope they come back to Churchill Downs for next year’s Derby with an extra $14,000 to burn.”
