It is always tempting, when something like what happened Thursday night in San Antonio goes down, to say we have never seen anything like this before.

Well, Bob Ryan of The Boston Globe has seen something like Thursday’s game, when broken air conditioning at the AT&T Center caused temperatures inside the arena to hit more than 90 degrees for Game 1 of the 2014 NBA Finals. The veteran basketball scribe recalled in a Globe video how sweltering it was in the old Boston Garden for the Celtics’ 121-103 win over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game 5 of the 1984 NBA Finals.

It is known in local lore as simply “The Heat Game,” when Larry Bird went for 34 points and 17 rebounds in the win to propel the Celtics to their 15th NBA championship.

“Never were fewer clothes worn by people in the Garden than that night,” Ryan said.

Surely, it also smelled terrific inside that building.
