Charlie WhitehurstA week ago, the Internet got a good chuckle when Tennessee Titans backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst revealed in an Instagram post that he had lost his jersey number to Titans punter Brett Kern after Kern beat him in an arm-wrestling contest.

It was a pretty hilarious story — and, as it turns out, a completely false one.

According to The Tennessean, Whitehurst’s humorous anecdote was completely fabricated. Kern still wears No. 6, while Whitehurst will stick with No. 12.

“It all happened so fast,” Whitehurst said. “I don’t remember what motivated me to do it, but I think it was kind of like, “Hey, this looks pretty good.’ It was a 30-second thought. I didn’t think anybody took me that (darn) serious.”

At the very least, the backup QB says he learned an important lesson about the powers of social media.

“That was kind of my first real experience with that whole … Twitter stuff,” Whitehurst said. “Some of the guys later were telling me, ‘Hey, they’re killing you on there.’ I wasn’t really paying much attention to it. But that’s the first time I realized how modern media can happen.”

Perhaps the prank was just wishful thinking from the “Clipboard Jesus,” who had worn No. 6 in all eight of his previous NFL seasons before making the switch to No. 12 when he joined the Titans in March. Might be time for an actual arm-wrestling contest, Charlie.
