New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter might be retiring at the end of the 2014 season, but that may not be the end of his days in Major League Baseball. After his career is over, Jeter said he would like to become an owner of a team one day.
Jeter has previously expressed interest in becoming an owner after his playing days, and he reaffirmed this during his Turn 2Â charity fundraiser dinner this past Sunday.
“Calling the shots, not answering to someone, that’s what interests me,” Jeter said to Zach Braziller of the New York Post. “I’d like to think I would be a good one.”
While owning a franchise seems to interest the Yankees captain, managing a team does not seem to be in the cards for the 39-year-old, as he said he would not like the travel or the time commitment. Though he has not gotten in contact with any owners to possibly work on a deal, Jeter said he will attempt to after the season comes to an end.
Jeter, for a large part of his career, played when George Steinbrenner owned the Bronx Bombers. During his reign with the Yankees, Steinbrenner had no shame in calling out players, coaches or the media. He famously fired manager Billy Martin on four different occasions. Those were valuable lessons he took from Steinbrenner, but Jeter said that his style would be more behind the scenes.
This season is not over yet, however, and the Yankees sit in second place in the American League East, fighting for the top spot with the Toronto Blue Jays. For his part, Jeter is hitting .273 with 11 RBIs.
“It’s not bittersweet,” Jeter said of his final year in pinstripes. “It’s not over yet. We’re trying to win.”
