Diego Godin’s Late Header Sends Italy Home Early At World Cup (Video)

Ten minutes. That’s all that separated Italy from a spot in the knockout round at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The Azzurri were playing with just 10 men in Tuesday’s match against Uruguay after Claudio Marchisio was ejected in the 59th minute. Shorthanded, the Italians tried to do their best to at least record a draw so they would be safe.

In the 81st minute, however, Diego Godin struck with a header off a corner to break the Italians’ backs and force them to go on the offensive for the rest of the game.

Godin’s goal held up as Uruguay won 1-0, ensuring that a third — yes, third — traditional world power will fail to advance to the knockout stage. Italy joins England and Spain as spectators for the rest of the tournament.
