The bizarre saga involving the wives of Seattle Mariners ace Felix Hernandez and former teammate Carlos Peguero came to a conclusion this week.
Maria Jacqueline Peguero was sentenced Monday to 12 months and one day in prison plus three years of supervision upon her release for using a bank card belonging to Sandra Hernandez to make nearly $200,000 worth of unauthorized online purchases, The Seattle Times reported Monday.
Peguero made 60 separate charges on the card over a three-month span in 2012, including one for $8,200 at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York in September of that year that drew scrutiny from the store, prompting an investigation. Investigators found Peguero using or wearing what were believed to be illegally purchased items in several Twitter photos, according to prosecutors.
Peguero, the daughter of former major league reliever Pedro Borbon, could have faced up to 20 years in prison but agreed to a plea deal, which involved her paying $191,000 in restitution. Hernandez reportedly was reimbursed for Peguero’s charges after fraud was discovered.
Carlos Peguero played 65 games for the Mariners from 2011 to 2013, hitting .195 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs. He’s now with the Omaha Storm Chasers, the Kansas City Royals’ Triple-A affiliate.
