Marouane Fellaini, Dries Mertens Lead Belgium’s Comeback Win Against Algeria At 2014 World Cup

It seems like late comebacks are going to become a theme at the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Belgium pulled off the latest thrilling comeback, as Marouane Fellaini and Dries Mertens scored in the second half to propel the Red Devils past Algeria, 2-1, in the first day of Group H action.

After falling behind early in the first half due to a penalty kick goal by Algeria’s Sofiane Feghouli in the 24th minute, Belgium failed to score in the first half despite, dominating ball possession for almost two-thirds of the game.

Finally in the 70th minute, Fellaini headed Kevin De Bruyne’s cross past Algeria goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi to even up the score.

Ten minutes later, Mertens scored on a counter attack from the right, receiving a pass from Eden Hazard and beating M’Bolhi at the near post to give Belgium its first lead of the game.

Aside from the penalty kick, Algeria failed to register a shot on goal in the entire game.

Both teams return to action on Sunday when Belgium takes on Russia and Algeria plays South Korea.
