Germany’s Free Kick Fake-Out Fail Gets Twitterverse Laughing (GIF)

When a trick play is executed to perfection, it plays in highlight reels for weeks.

When it flops, it plays in highlight reels for months.

This blunder happened in its Round of 16 game between Germany and Algeria during a free kick. After lining up five players around the ball during the kick, several German players started running past the ball to fake out the Algerian defense. However, instead of running past the ball, Thomas Muller tripped and fell.

After Muller’s faux pas, hilarity ensued on Twitter.

One has to wonder how often they tried this play during practice. Probably not enough.

Germany defeated Algeria, 2-1, in extra time to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2014 World Cup.
