Giancarlo Stanton’s Broken Bat Nearly Spears Marlins Teammate (Video)

When Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton is at the plate, everyone in the ballpark should give him their utmost attention. That advice applies to his teammates, too.

Stanton was batting Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Rays when a Chris Archer fastball split his bat in two. The ball made a beeline for shortshop Yunel Escobar’s glove, but the top half of Stanton’s bat went pinwheeling toward the Miami on-deck circle, where it nailed Marlins third baseman Casey McGehee in the midsection.

McGehee took a minute to shake off the collision and will probably be nursing some bruised ribs for the next few days, but in reality, he was incredibly lucky. Had Stanton’s bat hit him sharp end-first … well, we don’t even want to think about that.
