BOSTON — Red Sox first baseman/outfielder Mike Carp will miss time with a fractured right foot, according to manager John Farrell.
Carp suffered the injury when he was struck by a pitch earlier this week during the Red Sox’s series against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field. A CT scan performed Sunday revealed the fracture.
Carp was in a walking boot immediately following Boston’s 4-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday. It’s unclear how long Carp will be out, but the injury certainly means a roster move is forthcoming.
Third baseman Garin Cecchini, who was called up before Sunday’s game, said after the contest he has been optioned back to Triple-A Pawtucket, so the Red Sox likely will open their nine-game road trip with a couple of fresh faces.
Shortstop Stephen Drew and outfielder Daniel Nava are the two likeliest candidates to join the Red Sox in Cleveland on Monday.
