Pierre Thomas, James AndersonThe New England Patriots finally added some much needed depth at linebacker.

The Patriots signed former Chicago Bears and Carolina Panthers linebacker James Anderson and released first-year wide receiver Mark Harrison on Wednesday.

Anderson could be used as a nickel linebacker for the Patriots, who were lacking quality reserves at the position after losing Brandon Spikes and Dane Fletcher in free agency.

Anderson recorded 102 tackles and four sacks in 2013 with the Bears playing strong-side linebacker.

Harrison signed as an undrafted free agent last offseason, but he was placed on the non-football injury list after breaking his foot before the 2013 NFL draft. Harrison participated in organized team activities last week, but he didn’t appear to be at full health.

NESN.com can confirm MassLive.com’s report that Bill Belichick cut Harrison after he showed up late for an OTA.
