Final, Orioles 6-0: The Red Sox ended their ugly nine-game road trip on an ugly note. Boston dropped a 6-0 decision.
The Red Sox produced just one run against the Orioles in the teams’ three-game series at Camden Yards. Boston’s offense was held in check by Baltimore starter Wei-Yin Chen before a lengthy rain delay Wednesday. The unit couldn’t get anything going after the delay, either, as the Red Sox finished with just four hits.
Chen tossed seven shutout innings. He struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone.
Rubby De La Rosa surrendered three runs in the first inning, and while he ultimately settled down to last into the sixth inning, the Orioles’ early outburst was more than enough.
Chris Davis collected two hits, including a two-run homer in the first inning. Adam Jones produced an RBI double, Nick Hundley added an RBI single and Chris Capuano walked in two runs in the eighth inning.
Dustin Pedroia led the way for Boston’s sputtering offense with two hits. Brock Holt’s 10-game hit streak was snapped on his 26th birthday.
The Red Sox now return to Fenway Park for a seven-game homestand. The homestand kicks off with four games against the Cleveland Indians, beginning Thursday. The Red Sox went 2-7 on the road trip and now sit at 29-36 overall.
End 8th, Orioles 6-0: Chris Capuano’s struggles continue.
Nelson Cruz led off with a single into center field. Chris Davis, who homered in the first inning, followed with a double into right field.
The Red Sox opted to intentionally walk Manny Machado with one out and first base open. The moved proved unsuccessful, as Capuano couldn’t find the strike zone.
Capuano walked Jonathan Schoop on four pitches. The left-hander then struck out Nick Hundley but walked Nick Markakis on five pitches before finally escaping the inning.
Capuano now owns a 7.24 ERA over his last 14 appearances.
Mid 8th, Orioles 4-0: The Red Sox can’t buy a run.
Darren O’Day took over in the eighth inning after seven great frames from Wei-Yin Chen. Chen only threw 87 pitches, but the Orioles obviously weren’t going to run him back out there after a lengthy rain delay.
Mike Napoli forced O’Day to throw eight pitches. He ended up grounding back to the pitcher, however, for the first out.
Jonny Gomes reached on a throwing error by shortstop J.J. Hardy. There was some debate as to whether a fan touched the throw — which traveled to the wall in foul territory — and manager John Farrell came out for a chat. Nothing changed, and Gomes remained at first base.
Gomes took second on A.J. Pierzynski’s groundout and advanced to third base on a passed ball charged to Nick Hundley. Jonathan Herrera tried to bunt his way on, but O’Day was able to come off the mound to make the play.
Chris Capuano will pitch the bottom of the eighth inning for Boston.
End 7th, Orioles 4-0: Edward Mujica was sharp upon returning to the mound following the lengthy rain delay.
Mujica, who needed one pitch to record the final out of the sixth inning, struck out two in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
Mujica struck out Steve Pearce and Adam Jones. The right-hander featured a heavy dose of sliders to Pearce and went to the fastball to sit down Jones.
10:50 p.m., Orioles 4-0: Annnnd we’re back.
The rain is still falling at Camden Yards, but the Red Sox and Orioles have started back up in the seventh inning.
10:47 p.m., Orioles 4-0: It appears Edward Mujica will remain in the game.
10:36 p.m., Orioles 4-0: The tarp is coming off the field. It appears there will be more baseball.
This game is expected to resume at approximately 10:50 p.m.
10:32 p.m.:, Orioles 4-0: Some Red Sox players have returned to the dugout, although the rain still is falling at Camden Yards.
10:25 p.m., Orioles 4-0: We’re over an hour into this rain delay, and it doesn’t sound like things are going to clear up anytime soon.
The Red Sox and Orioles still are waiting this one out, but it wouldn’t be shocking if this game ultimately gets called. If it does, the O’s would be victorious.

Mid 7th, Orioles 4-0: David Ortiz provided some heroics Sunday, but he has struggled since the middle of May.
Dustin Pedroia connected on a one-out single in the seventh inning. Ortiz then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play.
And here comes the rain.
End 6th, Orioles 4-0: Rubby De La Rosa’s night ended in the sixth inning.
De La Rosa struck out J.J. Hardy and retired Manny Machado on a ground ball to third base before manager John Farrell turned to Edward Mujica.
Mujica, who has struggled at times, threw one pitch to Nick Hundley, who grounded into an inning-ending forceout.
It looked like it was going to be a long night for De La Rosa, who was touched for three runs in the fifth inning. The right-hander settled down, though, and he exited after 5 2/3 innings in which he allowed four earned runs on seven hits. De La Rosa struck out seven and walked two while throwing 105 pitches (71 strikes).
Mid 6th, Orioles 4-0: The Red Sox got something going in the sixth inning.
A.J. Pierzynski dropped a leadoff single into center field. Pierzynski is known to hack, and he wasted no time in jumping on a first-pitch changeup from Wei-Yin Chen.
Jackie Bradley Jr. was drilled in the numbers with one out after Jonathan Herrera struck out looking. Chen plunked Bradley with the first pitch of the at-bat.
Brock Holt, who has been absolutely dynamic atop the order, couldn’t build on the threat. He grounded into a 4-6-3, inning-ending double play.
Holt, who is riding a 10-game hit streak, is 0-for-3 thus far on his 26th birthday.
End 5th, Orioles 4-0: Rubby De La Rosa put together a nice inning in the fifth.
Steve Pearce reached to begin the frame, but De La Rosa struck out Adam Jones, Nelson Cruz and Chris Davis to end the inning. All three hitters went down swinging. That’s impressive considering the talent of each player.
Jones went down swinging on a changeup after four straight fastballs to begin the at-bat. Cruz saw just three pitches and fanned on a 96 mph fastball. Davis whiffed on 96 mph heat in a 2-2 count.
The Orioles stranded Pearce at second base, as he swiped the bag with Davis batting.
Mid 5th, Orioles 4-0: The Red Sox spoiled a leadoff single from David Ortiz in the fifth inning.
Ortiz singled past the shift and into right field. Big Papi, who entered the game hitting .159 since Boston’s mid-May series in Minnesota, had been 0-for-8 in this series before the fifth-inning single.
Jonny Gomes followed Mike Napoli’s popout with a ground ball to second base. Jonathan Schoop kicked off an easy, 4-6-3 double play.
End 4th, Orioles 4-0: The Orioles added a run in the fourth inning. They would have added another if it wasn’t for instant replay.
J.J. Hardy grounded a ball into the hole with one out. Shortstop Jonathan Herrera ranged over to make the play, but he had no chance of throwing out Hardy.
Jonathan Schoop dropped a two-out single in front of Jackie Bradley Jr. in center field after Rubby De La Rosa struck out Manny Machado for the second out.
De La Rosa got ahead of Nick Hundley with two down, but the Orioles catcher reached out and poked a 1-2 fastball into right field. It wasn’t a bad pitch but rather a good piece of hitting by Hundley. Hardy scored as Schoop raced into third base.
Nick Markakis grounded to the left side. The Red Sox were shifted to the right, and third baseman Xander Bogaerts made a diving stop. Bogaerts quickly flipped to second base, where Hundley initially was called safe, resulting in Baltimore’s fifth run. Red Sox manager John Farrell called for a challenge, though, and it was determined that Bogaerts’ flip beat Hundley.
Mid 4th, Orioles 3-0: Dustin Pedroia gave the Red Sox their first hit of the night with two outs in the fourth inning. Unfortunately for Boston, Pedroia was gunned down trying to stretch it into a double.
Wei-Yin Chen started the fourth inning by retiring Brock Holt and Xander Bogaerts. Holt grounded to second base, and Bogaerts struck out swinging.
Chen has six strikeouts through four innings.
Pedroia jumped ahead in the count 2-0 before lining a ball into the right field corner. The ball took a favorable bounce back to Nick Markakis, who quickly fired a strike to second base to nail Pedroia.
End 3rd, Orioles 3-0: Rubby De La Rosa enjoyed his best inning yet.
De La Rosa held the Orioles’ offense in check in the third, retiring Steve Pearce, Adam Jones and Nelson Cruz in order.
Pearce flied out to center field, Jones grounded to second base and Cruz struck out swinging. De La Rosa took a little off his fastball to put away Cruz.
Mid 3rd, Orioles 3-0: Make it nine straight to open the game for Wei-Yin Chen.
The bottom third of the Red Sox’s order couldn’t get anything going against the O’s lefty.
A.J. Pierzynski and Jonathan Herrera both struck out swinging. Jackie Bradley Jr., playing in his first game this series, flied out to right field.
End 2nd, Orioles 3-0: Rubby De La Rosa worked around a two-out single in the second inning.
Manny Machado, keeping his bat firmly in his hands, flied out to right field to begin the bottom of the second. Jonny Gomes didn’t exactly make it look easy, but he still managed to get the job done.
De La Rosa struck out Jonathan Schoop for the second out. The right-hander went back to the fastball after back-to-back sliders.
Nick Hundley reached after Jonathan Herrera failed to make a leaping catch. The ball deflected off Herrera’s glove and into center field for a two-out knock.
Nick Markakis grounded out to end the inning.
Mid 2nd, Orioles 3-0: Wei-Yin Chen has retired the first six batters he has faced.
David Ortiz struck out to begin the second inning. He went down swinging on a 2-2 slider. Chen now has three strikeouts, as the left-hander sat down Brock Holt and Dustin Pedroia in the first inning.
Mike Napoli and Jonny Gomes scattered flyouts to right field and left field, respectively.
End 1st, Orioles 3-0: This could be a long night for Rubby De La Rosa.
The Orioles struck for three runs in the first inning. Adam Jones delivered an RBI double, and Chris Davis sent a two-run homer sailing into the right field seats.
Steve Pearce, an aggressive hitter, got things going with a one-out, five-pitch walk.
De La Rosa made great use of his changeup in his first two starts. His changeup wasn’t quite as effective in the first inning, though. Jones and Davis both smoked changeups en route to putting a crooked number on the scoreboard.
Mid 1st, 0-0: The Red Sox quickly went down in order in the first inning.
Brock Holt is celebrating his 26th birthday. His first at-bat of the night wasn’t worth celebrating, though, as the birthday boy foul tipped a 3-2 fastball into the catcher’s mitt for a game-opening strikeout.
Holt’s strikeout was the first of two in the first inning for Wei-Yin Chen. Dustin Pedroia struck out swinging to end the inning.
Xander Bogaerts popped out to first base in between the two K’s.
7:11 p.m.: Wei-Yin Chen deals a first-pitch strike.
6:55 p.m.: It looks like this one will begin on time, although the forecast in Baltimore isn’t exactly promising. After two rain delays Tuesday, the last thing anyone needs is more disruptions.
5:50 p.m.: Jackie Bradley Jr. will return to the Red Sox’s starting lineup after sitting out the last two games.
Bradley will play center field and bat ninth. He’ll be joined in the outfield by Brock Holt (left field, batting first) and Jonny Gomes (right field, batting sixth).
Stephen Drew, who is dealing with oblique tightness, will again be out of the Red Sox’s lineup. He has missed the last two games after suffering the injury during Sunday’s series finale in Detroit. Jonathan Herrera will play shortstop and bat eighth.

De La Rosa will take the ball for the Sox as they wrap up their three-game series with the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards. De La Rosa will square off with Wei-Yin Chen, who already has faced Boston twice this season.
This marks De La Rosa’s third start with the Red Sox. The 25-year-old tossed seven shutout innings in his first start against the Tampa Bay Rays on May 31. He then surrendered four earned runs on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers last Friday. De La Rosa owns a 3.04 ERA (18 earned runs over 53 1/3 innings) and 1.22 WHIP in 10 starts with Triple-A Pawtucket this season.
Chen. who enters Wednesday’s contest with a 6-2 record, is 1-1 against the Red Sox this season. He gave up four earned runs on 12 hits over 5 2/3 innings in a losing effort on April 3, and then allowed three earned runs on four hits over five innings while earning a victory on April 21. Chen is 3-3 with a 5.26 ERA in nine career starts against Boston.
