ESPN.com reports the Heat are exploring a way in which they could sign New York Knicks swingman Carmelo Anthony, which would make their basketball superpower even more super.

According to ESPN, Miami’s “officials and leading players have already started to explore their options for creating sufficient financial flexibility,” in order to make a free-agent run at Anthony this summer.

In order to do so, however, all of Miami’s current “Big Three” — LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade — would have to restructure their contracts. That seems difficult, no? Well, according to ESPN, they could do so by all opting out of their current contracts and then re-signing contracts at a lower number as to get under the salary cap.

Anthony reportedly has until June 23 to notify the Knicks whether he’s going to opt out of his contract and become a free agent. The Heat could sign him on July 1 when free agency begins.

If Anthony does opt out, he’d be walking away from $23.3 million next season. According to the ESPN report, new Knicks president Phil Jackson has already begun trying to convince Anthony to stay in New York.
