Rumors of Kemp possibly coming to Boston started flying on Sunday after the Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo reported that the Red Sox spent “significant time” watching the Dodgers’ star outfielder last week.
Those rumors were tempered on Monday, however, when WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported that there’s “nothing going on” between the Sox and Kemp, citing a major league source.
The Dodgers are currently loaded at the outfield position, as Kemp’s position mates include Yasiel Puig, Andre Ethier, Carl Crawford and second-year player Scott Van Slyke. The Red Sox, meanwhile, could definitely use a bat in the outfield to spark an offense that ranks near the bottom of the majors in several offensive categories.
Yet Boston appears to be looking elsewhere, as Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti told Cafardo that Kemp is not on the market.
Even if the Red Sox were interest in acquiring Kemp, it would come with a heavy price tag. The 29-year-old signed an eight-year, $160 million contract extension with Los Angeles before the 2012 season and will still have five years and $107 million remaining on that deal after this season.
