Jeremy JohnsonNew England Patriots fans thought their team was signing Jermichael Finley, Dustin Keller or Kevin Williams when a spot opened up on the 90-man roster Thursday, but it wasn’t to be.

The Patriots signed wide receiver Jeremy Johnson, a league source told Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun.

Johnson is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound SMU product, who ran a 4.64-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in March. The undrafted free agent also clocked a 6.91-second three-cone and 4.44-second short shuttle.

Johnson caught 112 passes for 1,112 yards with six touchdowns in 2013 with the Mustangs.

UPDATE (10:30 a.m.): The Patriots later confirmed the deal, which came five days before the team opens its three-day minicamp.
