Rihanna, Ann Coulter Compete For Title Of No. 1 USA Soccer Hater

While soccer has gained popularity among American fans during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, at least two public figures are refusing to jump on the U.S. Soccer bandwagon.

Singer Rihanna has received a lot of attention for tweeting her support of any team that faced the U.S. in group play in Brazil.

While Rihanna’s aversion to USA soccer might just be a coincidence — she said on Twitter that Germany and Portugal are two of her favorite teams — it’s also important to note that she’s not American. The singer was born and raised in Barbados.

American political writer Ann Coulter, however, doesn’t have that excuse.

Coulter wrote a syndicated column in which she said Americans liking soccer was “a sign of the nation’s moral decay,” and she managed to offend both soccer fans and immigrants to the U.S. simultaneously.

“If more ‘Americans’ are watching soccer today, it’s only because of the demographic switch effected by Teddy Kennedy’s 1965 immigration law,” Coulter wrote. “I promise you: No American whose great-grandfather was born here is watching soccer. One can only hope that, in addition to learning English, these new Americans will drop their soccer fetish with time.”
