TonalistThe coveted Triple Crown goes unclaimed once again.

Tonalist won 146th running of the Belmont Stakes. The 3-year-old thoroughbred completed the 1 1/2 mile race — the longest in the Triple Crown — in 2:28.52. Commissioner finished second, while Medal Count finished third. Triple Crown hopeful California Chrome finished fourth in a dead heat with Wicked Strong.

California Chrome is the 13th horse to win the Kentucky Derby and Preakness but fail to win the Belmont Stakes since Affirmed completed the Triple Crown in 1978.

Interestingly, Tonalist is the 15th horse to win the Belmont without running in the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness, something outspoken California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn called “the coward’s way out” in a post-race interview on NBC.
