It was just another day at the ballpark for Atlanta Braves shortstop Andrelton Simmons Monday night, as he executed yet another absurd defensive feat.
Simmons’ Gold Glove defense was on display during the fourth inning against the Miami Marlins when he somehow — probably through the use of magic — was able to change directions in a split-second to record a force out that looked impossible.
With a runner on first, Miami put on the hit-and-run, which sent Simmons charging to his left to cover second base. Jordany Valdespin hit the ball right where he needed to, sending a grounder toward the spot Simmons had just bolted from, but that’s when the Braves shortstop showed that he’s superhuman.
Simmons managed to dive back for the ball — in the complete opposite direction his momentum was taking him — snag the grounder and then flop back toward second to tag the base with his glove for the force out.

The play was certainly one of the best Simmons has made all season, but was he happy with it after the game? Of course not. He was salty that he wasn’t able to turn two.
“I couldn’t believe it. The funny thing is, the guy was mad he didn’t throw the ball to first base,” third baseman Chris Johnson said, via MLB.com. “How do you make that play and then get upset that you don’t throw the ball to first base? That’s how good he is. That was an incredible play, just to catch it, let alone roll over and touch the bag.”
