With the game in a scoreless deadlock during extra time, it appeared a penalty shootout would be needed to decide it. But Lionel Messi wasn’t about to let that happen.
Magic Messi turned on the jets before dropping a perfect pass to Angel Di Maria, who sent a left-footed shot flying past Swiss goalkeeper Diego Benaglio in the far corner of the goal in the 118th minute.
Di Maria’s strike was the second-latest game-winning goal in World Cup history, according to ESPN Stats & Info.
Despite a late rally from Switzerland, which hit the post on a shot, Argentina held on for the 1-0 win as it advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals.
