Jim Brown might have some explaining to do.
The NFL Hall of Famer and Cleveland Browns legend made headlines Monday when he claimed that his 1964 NFL Championship ring was stolen from him after he discovered that the ring was being sold on the auction website Lelands.com.
Apparently the website is sticking to its guns, as Lelands.com chairman Josh Evans disputed Brown’s claims on Tuesday.
“We never sell anything that has been stolen or not authenticated,” Evans said, via the Pioneer Press. “It’s unfortunate that (Brown) has gone in this direction, but it came from a family member who turned around and sold it.”
Evans went on to explain that Lelands.com legally obtained the ring from a member of Brown’s family in 1998 and sold the item on its website for around $33,000. The individual who purchased the ring, Evans says, is now putting it up for sale.
Brown said Monday that he filed a police report to get his ring back and looks forward to reuniting with the only championship ring he earned over his illustrious nine-year NFL career.
If Evans’ remarks are true, however, getting his beloved championship ring back might prove more difficult than imagined.
