BU Alum Joe Sacco Hired As Bruins Assistant Coach, Replaces Geoff Ward

SaccoThe Boston Bruins announced the hiring of Joe Sacco as assistant coach Thursday. He replaces Geoff Ward, who will coach in Germany next season.

Sacco, a 45-year-old Medford, Mass., native, played college hockey at Boston University before enjoying a 13-year NHL career with five different teams. His most recent coaching job was as a Buffalo Sabres assistant last season.

Sacco also was the Colorado Avalanche’s head coach from 2009-10 through 2012-13, going 130-134-30. The Avalanche made the Stanley Cup playoffs as the eighth seed in 2009-10, but that was their only postseason appearance with Sacco behind the bench.

Sacco also was an assistant in the AHL for the Lowell Lock Monsters (2004-05) and Albany River Rats (2006-07). He was the Lake Erie Monsters’ head coach from 2007 to 2009.
