David Ortiz went deep Saturday night at Tropicana Field.

Well, almost.

The Boston Red Sox slugger knocked a long ball out to the right field wall with two outs in the first inning against the Tampa Bay Rays, and it ended up in the stands. Unfortunately, that was thanks to a fan — a Red Sox fan to boot — who reached over the wall to make the catch. The umpires gave Ortiz a ground-rule double.

Red Sox manager John Farrell called for a review of the hit, as it looked as though the ball could have gone over the wall regardless of the fan’s reach. Replay showed the ball was headed for the top of the wall, but it was inconclusive as to whether or not it would have gone over, so the call stood.

To make matters worse, Big Papi was stranded at second when Mike Napoli struck out in the next at-bat.
