This summer, hockey fans witnessed the unveiling of a few unorthodox Dave Gunnarsson-designed goalie masks featuring Pac-Man and characters from Ghostbusters.
Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers released his new Gunnarsson-designed mask for 2014-15 on Monday, but it features a more traditional look with a nod to his Swedish heritage.
As always, King Henrik’s mask will display a crown on the forefront because he’s not ashamed of showing off his royalty. Meanwhile, Lady Liberty graces the left and right sides of the mask.
While one might think Lundqvist is only paying tribute to the city he plays in, by including three crowns on his mask (one of them being his and the other two belonging to Lady Liberty), but he’s also tipping his cap to his native Sweden.
Of course, the Sweden national team jersey has the “Tre Kronor” (three crowns) prominently displayed on the front, so by having three crowns on his mask, King Henrik subtly pays homage to his home country.
Let’s be honest. That’s a lot cooler than wearing a mask with old arcade-game characters.
