Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto might need to start keeping a messy locker if he wants to avoid being the subject of trade rumors in the future.

Despite the fact that Votto has a full no-trade clause in his contract, rumors began to spread quickly on Sunday morning before the Reds-Brewers game that the slugger had been traded. Votto was given the day off against Milwaukee as he has been dealing with a quad injury of late, but that wasn’t the only factor that led reporters to believe the face of the franchise was on his way out of town.

Votto is a tidy guy — perhaps too tidy — and his immaculate locker had many believing that he was headed to Tampa Bay in exchange for Rays pitcher David Price, whose name has been thrown around freely in trade talks.

After the mid-morning chaos subsided though, reporters learned something very important about Votto: he’s just a simple guy that doesn’t like a lot of clutter.

Well, thanks to Votto, we all learned that it is possible to be too clean.
