It’s a great day to be in Cleveland.
That isn’t said very often, but that’s the power of LeBron James. The NBA superstar turned Cleveland into the happiest city in the world Friday when he announced on SportsIllustrated.com that he would be “coming home” and signing with the Cavaliers.
It’s been a tense week for fans, but with reportedly $1 million worth of Cavaliers season tickets being sold Wednesday and fans flocking to James’ Ohio home Thursday, Cleveland’s optimism finally was rewarded. The LBJ free-agency circus finally was over, but the party was just starting in Northeast Ohio.
Fans took to the streets after the news broke, resulting in plenty of car honking and yelling of “The King has returned!”
NBC News also caught up with some ecstatic fans, with one man summing up the city’s feelings pretty perfectly, saying: “Everybody’s happy. Everybody that I’ve seen has a smile on their face.”
The city wasted no time celebrating the good news, too, unveiling an absolutely massive banner of LeBron in record time in downtown Cleveland.
