Liverpool-Roma Live: AS Roma Wins 'Football At Fenway' On Marco Borriello's Late Goal

Liverpool Roma Fenway Park 2014 Final, 1-0 Roma: It’s over at Fenway Park. Roma defeats Liverpool for the second time in as many years.

Borriello’s late goal provided the difference in the scoreline. Roma wins the rematch of the 2012 “Football at Fenway” event, sending the throngs of Liverpool supporters home with a sense of disappointment, while its own fans celebrate the victory.

While neither team was at its sharpest, the first hour was honest and competitive. The game hit a lull in the second half, as the numerous substitutes took some time to find their rhythm.

Roma prevailed in the end, after a determined Borriello somehow directed his shot on goal. Jones was screened by his own players, and only saw the ball after it sneaked through Robinson’s legs.

The result will sting the Reds and delight the Romans, but both teams achieved their most important goal. A bulk of their respective played a real game against a strong opponent, building up their fitness and sharpness ahead of the next games on their U.S. tours and the marathon that will be the 2014-15 season.

Stefano Perrinari floated a corner kick into the Liverpool area. Borriello volleyed it, and the shot deflected off of Agger, went through Robinson’s legs and beat Jones.

57th minute, 0-0: Lambert hits a powerful shot on goal, forcing Skorupski to make a save at the near post.

50th minute, 0-0: Kelly sends a cross into the Roma penalty area from the right. Lambert meets it but scuffs his shot into Romagnoli.

Coutinho initially found Kelly on the right with a well-weighted pass.

49th minute, 0-0: Now Coutinho shoots even wider (and higher) from further out.

48th minute, 0-0: Coutinho fires a shot wide from outside of the Roma penalty area.

46th minute, 0-0: The second half is underway.

Liverpool made a change at halftime, replacing Enrique with Robinson.

Roma made two changes. Benatia and Iturbe depart. Romagnoli and Destro enter the fray.

Halftime, 0-0: The first half comes to an end. It’s still goalless.

The first 45 minutes came and went without either team registering a shot on goal. It’s not entirely surprising, as this is the first game in both teams’ U.S. tour. After only a couple days of practice, Liverpool and Roma are still building their fitness, cohesiveness and sharpness.

As we mentioned earlier, Borini’s injury is cause for concern, but it wasn’t all bad for Liverpool. The Reds started brightly and dominated possession for the first 20 minutes. Ibe caused a few problems with his pace. The young winger didn’t look at all out of place.

Roma started slowly but gradually improved. Had this game been played later in the summer or during the season, Totti probably would have converted the chance Cole created into a goal. After all, Totti is second-highest goal scorer in Serie A history.

Nainggolan was a lively and powerful presence in the midfield, and Cole was useful on the left side of defense. These two new signings could be impact players for Roma in 2014-15.

43rd minute, 0-0: Nainggolan is cautioned for a high challenge on Allen, which floors the Liverpool midfielder.

40th minute, 0-0: Nainggolan shoots high and wide from long distance.

Roma is in the midst of its best spell of the game.

33rd minute, 0-0: Roma comes close to opening the scoring after some good build-up play on the left.

Cole beat the offside trap and crossed to Totti who, after a darting run toward goal, met the delivery with a flying volley. The Italian’s shot went wide.

30th minute, 0-0: Roma is begging to show a little more confidence on the ball.

The Italian club is having longer spells of possession and pushing the game into midfield and Liverpool’s third (on occasion).

Roma hasn’t created any scoring chances, but it is showing some menace when players make quick combinations in the midfield.

23rd minute, 0-0: We haven’t seen any goals or shots on goal so far, but Liverpool is enjoying an advantage in possession.

However, the Reds are struggling to break down Roma, which is defending with up to nine players when Liverpool chooses to build its attacks slowly.

20th minute, 0-0: Coutinho drives a free kick through the goalmouth.

It looked dangerous, as Skorupski failed to catch it. However, none of the Liverpool players in the Roma penalty area could head it on goal.

17th minute, 0-0: There have been no shots on goal or clear-cut scoring chances so far.

The major story in the first 15 minutes was Borini’s injury. It will cause considerable angst, as Borini is the subject of serious transfer interest from Sunderland.

10th minute, 0-0: The game has been bogged down in the midfield for the last few minutes, as the teams are struggling to maintain possession and break down the opposition.

Fifth minute, 0-0: A contingent of Liverpool fans has dedicated itself to booing Ashley Cole whenever he touches the ball.

Cole spent his entire career at Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea before joining Roma on a free transfer this summer.

Fourth minute, 0-0: Playing its familiar, 4-3-3 system, Liverpool has controlled possession early on.

Roma is countering with a 4-2-3-1 set-up and appears to have settled into compact shell inside its own half.

Kickoff, 0-0: “Football at Fenway” is underway.

Pregame: The Liverpool’s anthem, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” has been sung at Fenway Park, and the teams are now coming onto the field.

1 p.m.: Once again, it’s time for “Football at Fenway.”

Liverpool FC makes its long-anticipated return to Boston’s Fenway Park on Wednesday evening. The Reds will take on Italian club AS Roma in a prestigious, preseason exhibition game. The Liverpool-Roma game is a rematch of the unforgettable 2012 contest, which Roma won 2-1. The clubs are the same, but the circumstances are much different.

Both teams surprisingly finished second in their respective domestic leagues in 2013-14. Manchester City edged Liverpool in last season’s Premier League, while Juventus finished well ahead of Roma in Italy’s Serie A (first division).

The clubs are gearing up for another title challenge and a return to the UEFA Champions League in 2014-15. Wednesday’s game is crucial for both, as it kicks off their 2014 U.S. Tours (which also will include International Champions Cup games next week).
