The Boston Red Sox have Friday off because of Tropical Storm Arthur, but their players on the mend still will work on their respective rehab assignments.
Mike Carp, who had been rehabbing with Triple-A Pawtucket after a broken foot, will play with Double-A Portland this weekend, MassLive.com reported. Carp had only one hit in 13 at-bats with the PawSox and struck out five times. He will play in the Sea Dogs’ three-game set — which includes a doubleheader Saturday — against the New Britain Rock Cats.
Third baseman Will Middlebrooks will remain in Pawtucket after restarting his rehab assignment Tuesday. He has played in two Triple-A games as a designated hitter since then, going a combined 2-for-6 with a triple and a home run. He has been able to hit, but the swelling in his injured finger has not allowed him to play in the field just yet.
The third Red Sox on the disabled list, Shane Victorino, ran in the outfield at Fenway Park on Friday afternoon. Victorino had been rehabbing with Pawtucket as well, but he suffered back tightness and has sat out since June 24. There is still no exact return date for the outfielder.
Red Sox manager John Farrell said Victorino’s workload will increase over the course of the coming days.
“Shane’s baseball activities continue to ramp up, particularly with the the running and agility work,” Farrell said, via MassLive.com.
