Brandon Browner, Malcolm ButlerFOXBORO, Mass. — Brandon Browner was tired of giving up receptions, so he turned up the intensity and had his best practice to date for the New England Patriots.

The cornerback beat wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins in their first 1-on-1 matchup, then, in a physical showdown, Thompkins knocked Browner down and made a reception in their second face-off. Browner beat Thompkins again and began to get annoyed that the offense wasn’t getting the ball out fast enough.

Wide receivers coach Chad O’Shea called a penalty on Browner against wideout Brandon LaFell, and the cornerback got heated.

After practice, Browner said that he and O’Shea “hugged it out.”

Browner recorded his first interception of training camp late in 11-on-11s against Tom Brady.

Check out the rest of NESN.com’s observations from Wednesday’s practice:

— Quarterback Tom Brady was 2-for-4 in 7-on-7s drills and 8-for-18 with an interception in 11-on-11s. Quarterback Ryan Mallett was 1-for-3 in 7-on-7s and 7-for-17 in 11-on-11s. Rookie Jimmy Garoppolo was 0-for-1 in both 7-on-7s and 11-on-11s. Garoppolo had a light day of practice.

— It was a rough day overall for the Patriots’ offense. Tight ends Justin Jones and Rob Gronkowski, running back Roy Finch and wide receivers Julian Edelman, Kenbrell Thompkins, Derrick Johnson all had drops during practice. Edelman and Thompkins had multiple drops.

— Jones had an up-and-down practice. He ran an impressive route during 1-on-1s against safety Shamiel Gary but needs further development with his hands and blocking.

— Linebackers Jamie Collins and James Anderson had impressive pass coverage plays in 1-on-1s against running backs and tight ends. Tight end D.J. Williams looked solid in 1-on-1s.
