Patriots Training Camp Observations: Darrelle Revis Excels Against Tom Brady

NFL: New England Patriots-Training CampFOXBORO, Mass. — Darrelle Revis made Tom Brady and Julian Edelman look like Jimmy Garoppolo and Wilson Van Hooser, respectively, on Saturday during New England Patriots training camp practice.

Revis schooled Brady and Edelman on two deep passes — one in 1-on-1 drills and the other in 11-on-11s. Revis picked off Brady twice on attempts to Edelman — a connection that’s usually difficult to contain in Patriots practices. Revis also swatted a Brady pass intended for receiver Brandon LaFell in 11-on-11s.

Revis also shut down wide receivers Josh Boyce and Derrick Johnson in 1-on-1 drills, though he got fooled on a pass to LaFell.

The Patriots were in pads for the first time Saturday, and apparently that’s all it takes to get an All-Pro performance out of Revis.

Check out the rest of Saturday’s practice observations:

— With so many traditional “slot receivers” on the roster, it makes sense that the Patriots ran an end-around drill during practice. Boyce and LaFell could be dangerous on those untraditional plays.

— Running back Roy Finch is severely undersized, but he showed some quick feet in running back drills. Jonas Gray is more of a bowling ball-type ball-carrier, and he had a rough day with drops and fumbles.

— Safety Kanorris Davis got some 1-on-1 special teams work with assistant coach Joe Judge. Davis doesn’t contribute often on defense, so he’d have to make the team as a core special-teamer.

— Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins’ best play of the day came on a pass from Brady when he was being covered by Brandon Browner. The cornerback swatted at the ball and missed, but Thompkins still had the focus to pull in the pass. Thompkins had a couple drops on the day.

— Linebacker Dont’a Hightower participated in 1-on-1 pass-rush drills and had some success. He did the same last offseason, then rarely rushed during the season, so feel free to take that with a grain of salt. Defensive tackle Sealver Siliga was able to get past his offensive lineman on multiple occasions. He has received a lot of “regular” defense reps with Tommy Kelly out of team drills.

— Here are the results from defensive back-wide receiver 1-on-1s:

Revis beat Boyce

Cornerback Justin Green beat Thompkins

Cornerback Logan Ryan beat wide receiver Danny Amendola

Cornerback Malcolm Butler beat LaFell

Cornerback Kyle Arrington beat Van Hooser

— Ryan and Revis stood out the most in 1-on-1 coverage drills. On offense, Boyce made some solid plays.

— Tavon Wilson had an interception in 7-on-7s on a Garoppolo pass that was behind tight end Justin Jones. Jones got his hands on it but knocked it in the air to Wilson.

— Brady was 8-of-11 passing in 11-on-11s and 4 of 5 in 7-on-7s. Ryan Mallett was 2 of 4 in 11-on-11s with an interception by Arrington and 3 of 3 in 7-on-7s. Garoppolo, who struggled again, was 2 of 7 with an interception to Butler in 11-on-11s and 1 of 2 in 7-on-7s.
