The 2014 FIFA World Cup provided soccer fans with some pretty amazing goals, from Robin van Persie’s diving header to Lionel Messi’s brilliant strikes.

It may come as a surprise, then, that the goal of the month — and possibly the year — came during a Peruvian Primera Division game.

Near the end of the first half of Thursday’s game between Sporting Cristal and rival Juan Arich, Sporting Cristal’s Carlos Lobaton recovered the ball in his own defensive zone.

What happened next was spectacular.

Lobaton absolutely launched a perfect kick that sailed over the head the out-of-position goaltender and under the crossbar for the goal.

The 34-year-old Lobaton also plays for the Peruvian national team, but unfortunately for the rest of the world, Peru hasn’t qualified for the World Cup since 1982.

If Lobaton keeps scoring goals like this, though, he’s bound to get noticed pretty quickly.
