The Pittsburgh Pirates turned a great opportunity into an absolute nightmare Wednesday evening.
The Pirates were the victims of the ol’ inning-ending double play on a walk, and if you haven’t heard of that one before, it’s because it might be the first time it’s happened in baseball history. We’ll break the shenanigans down for you.
With Travis Snider on second base and Gaby Sanchez on third, San Francisco Giants reliever Jean Machi walked Chris Stewart to load the bases in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, for the Pirates though, Snider thought the bases were already loaded.
He took off for third, promptly got tagged out in a rundown and shortly thereafter, Stewart — who broke for home following his teammate’s blunder — followed suit.

Without throwing another pitch, the Giants escaped the inning unscathed.
To make matters worse, the Pirates were holding onto a slim 5-4 lead at the time of the baserunning gaffe, but ended up falling to the Giants 7-5. Oops.
