It’s clear that St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam already has made an impact before even taking a snap in an NFL game, and he continued to prove that Wednesday night.

Sam was one of the highlights of ESPN’s annual sports award show, the ESPYs, as he was given the Arthur Ashe Courage Award, the event’s most prestigious honor. The Missouri product received the award after he announced earlier this year that he was gay, making him the first openly gay player in the NFL.

Sam has proved himself to be a courageous and inspiring person, two qualities that were on display during his acceptance speech. Sam broke down a couple of times during the memorable speech in which he provided inspiration while also thanking those who helped him get where he is today.
