Red Sox Podcast: Henry Owens, Other Prospects Making Noise In Minors

Jul 3, 2014

Christian Vazquez, Henry OwensThe Boston Red Sox have fallen on hard times after being swept by the Chicago Cubs this week at Fenway Park.

The Red Sox haven’t been able to find a winning formula this season, and it’s unclear whether they’ll be buyers or sellers as the Major League Baseball trade deadline nears. Either way, this represents an important point in the Red Sox’s 2014 season. And that importance extends well beyond the major league roster.

It’s no secret that the Red Sox have a deep minor league system. They’re already relying on young players, with Mookie Betts recently joining Jackie Bradley Jr., Xander Bogaerts and Co. In fact, Brandon Workman and Rubby De La Rosa recently put the Red Sox’s big league rotation into a state of flux by virtue of their impressive showings while Clay Buchholz and Felix Doubront were sidelined.

So, who’s next?

The Red Sox’s farm system will be well-represented at this year’s All-Star festivities, but some under-the-radar players also are making noise. NESN.com Red Sox beat writer Ricky Doyle caught up with Brendan McGair of The Pawtucket Times and Kevin Thomas of the Portland Press Herald to discuss the very interesting state of affairs facing the PawSox and Sea Dogs.

Editor’s note: This podcast was recorded before Deven Marrero was promoted from Double-A Portland to Triple-A Pawtucket.
