The Boston Red Sox officially released reliever Chris Capuano on Tuesday, ending the veteran left-hander’s brief stint with his hometown team.
Capuano, a native of Springfield, Mass., was lights out for the Red Sox during the early part of this season, holding opponents scoreless in each of his first 12 appearances out of the bullpen. The 35-year-old began to falter in May, though, and imploded in June, allowing 10 earned runs in just four innings over his final five outings before being designated for assignment on June 25.
In all, Capuano appeared in 28 games for the Red Sox, finishing with a 4.55 ERA.
The Red Sox also made two other player moves Tuesday, trading lefty Rich Hill to the Los Angeles Angels for cash consideration and announcing that Rule 5 draftee Michael Almanzar has been returned to the team from the Baltimore Orioles. Almanzar, a first/third baseman, will be assigned to Double-A Portland.
