With just a handful of days until Thursday’s MLB non-waiver trade deadline, teams that are out of contention are shopping assets while trying to rebuild for the future.
The Philadelphia Phillies, who are last in the National League East, are one of those teams.
After initially planning to keep left-handed starting pitcher Cole Hamels, the Phillies have placed the 2008 World Series MVP on the market, FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi reported Monday, citing sources.
Hamels is just 5-5, but has a 2.72 ERA with 125 strikeouts against 39 walks. The 30-year-old ace also is worth 3.5 wins above replacement — the fifth-best among NL pitchers.
Because of these numbers, the price for Hamels won’t be cheap. And according to Morosi, the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals are the two teams with the “best chance” to land Hamels. They’re also among the nine teams not blocked by Hamels’ partial no-trade clause.
