LeBron James won’t accept anything less than an NBA-maximum $22.2 million contract in his free agency. So for the Miami Heat to have the salary cap room they want, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh would have to accept big pay cuts.
And it seems they’re willing to do that.
James took a pay cut to become one of the Heat’s Big Three back in 2010, and now Bosh and Wade will do the same for him. The Heat reportedly have been telling free agents that they’ll have $12 million in cap space once the three re-sign.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst reported, via sources, that Bosh plans to accept a five-year contract starting at $11 million and Wade a four-year deal starting at $12 million. James is expected to get the money he wants, though he hasn’t expressed how long he’s looking to sign.
The cuts would allow the Heat to build a stronger roster around James, Wade, and Bosh. They’d be serious contenders for free agent point guard Kyle Lowry. They’re also after center Marcin Gortat, but the Washington Wizards have made re-signing him their top priority.
