Philadelphia Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon continues to be a subject of trade rumors.
Papelbon, whose name also was tossed around in trade speculation last July, is a possible trade candidate again this season as the Phillies bring up the rear in the National League East. The Detroit Tigers, who could use bullpen help, are among those monitoring the right-hander, according to FOX Sports’ Jon Morosi and Ken Rosenthal.

Papelbon is having an excellent season despite the Phillies’ woes. The 33-year-old has 23 saves and owns a 1.17 ERA in 39 appearances. It’s reasonable to think Papelbon could be of interest to teams scoping out the trade market is search of relievers, though the veteran’s contract remains a burden.
Papelbon is owed $13 million next season. He also has a $13 million option for 2016 that vests with 55 games finished in 2015 or 100 games finished in 2014-15. Papelbon may also block a trade to 17 clubs.
The five-time All-Star frequently has faced scrutiny since leaving the Boston Red Sox and joining Philadelphia before the 2012 season. Perhaps this season finally will mark the end of his rollercoaster ride with the Phillies.
