Felix Doubront has gotten his wish.
The Boston Red Sox traded 26-year-old left-hander to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday, according to multiple reports.
Jon Morosi of FOX Sports was the first to report the deal, followed shortly after by CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman and Yahoo! Sports’ Jeff Passan.
In return, the Red Sox will receive a player to be named later or cash, according to multiple reports.
The teams have yet to confirm the trade.
Doubront, who entered the season as the Red Sox’s No. 3 starter, became frustrated with his situation in Boston after he was moved to the bullpen last month. He struggled as a reliever, allowing multiple runs in three of his seven appearances out of the ‘pen.
The southpaw’s final outing in a Red Sox uniform was one of his worst: He allowed six runs on six hits and two walks in just 2/3 of an inning in the team’s 14-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday.
“I don’t think that (Doubront’s) disinterested. He’s capable of more. We’ve seen that,” Farrell told reporters after Monday’s game. “Three of the last four outings out of the bullpen have been very good. Tonight, obviously not the case. On a night when you’re hopeful you’ve got an opportunity to stretch him out a little bit, get multiple innings, that wasn’t the case.”
Overall, Doubront posted a 2-4 record with a 6.07 ERA in 17 appearances (10 starts) this season.
UPDATE (6:02 p.m.): The teams have confirmed the trade, with the Red Sox also announcing that they have called up Brandon Workman from Triple-A Pawtucket.
